A diverse, multicultural society with a stunning visual backdrop, New Zealand is a popular choice amongst many expats. Ranked as the most peaceful country in the world by the Global Peace Index Survey, it is a highly developed country that sits alongside other leaders in terms of high standards of living, education and development.

Although New Zealand is the youngest country in the world there are still a variety of cultural influences that contribute to its society, including European, Asian and Maori cultures. As an island, New Zealand also caters for a range of lifestyles and recreational activities – from bustling cities to relaxed rural destinations it is easy to see why this is an attractive destination for people from all backgrounds.

In general, living costs in New Zealand are very reasonable and lower than living in the UK. Unemployment rates are also considerably lower than the United Kingdom but you will need to apply for a visa if you are going to be working, studying or living within the country for any considerable amount of time. Visas currently available are; working holiday visas, temporary work visas or a skilled migrant visa which will allow you to live and work in New Zealand indefinitely. For more information on applying for visas see here.

There is a shortage of particular skills within New Zealand including engineers, dentists and those working within the construction industry. For a full list of the occupations on the skills shortage visit the Government of New Zealand’s website.

Moving your belongings overseas to New Zealand is a relatively straight forward process and can take around 8-14 weeks to complete. Household goods, furniture and personal effects can all be imported into New Zealand duty free, however they must have been owned and in use at least 12 months prior to importation.

All items being imported into New Zealand must also be listed in a comprehensive inventory and the appropriate import documentation must be completed upon collection of your goods. You should ensure that your goods are adequately protected by the correct level of insurance – this can usually be secured via your removals company (us!) or an associated insurance provider.

We’re experienced in overseas moves and our trained experts can help you complete all of the necessary documentation needed to import your goods.
